On Writing by Stephen King

On Writing, A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King is one of my favourite books that describes the actual life of a writer from early childhood to a full and successful career.

Even someone as successful as Stephen King, had to overcome naysayers who tried to discourage him. Here is a quote that could have derailed him forever, yet luckily didn't.

"I kept hearing Miss Hisler asking why I wanted to waste my talent, why I wanted to waste my time, why I wanted to write junk."

I heard a variation of this negative talk myself and would love to wring the neck of the people who have never accomplished anything in their own lives, but love to put down others.

King advocates four to six hours of reading and writing every day. And if you love to read and write, he says, this will not seem strenuous. It will be a joyful experience rather than a job you must do.
